Learning about Position and Orientation online

We are looking into position and orientation and I recently found a really fun site called cospaces. This lets the class create a VR world (and yes they can view it in VR if they have a phone that will work properly) and move around it.
I decided to get the class to use this with position and orientation.
The class will need to give a series of commands using either the cardinal and intercardinal points or with bearings.
Here was a quick demonstration task they were given as an idea of how they could do it.
The great thing about this site is that they can also use it to practice coding as well and get people moving around.
Children will be able to test each other on their own Cospaces work as well. It should be a lot of fun and I am definitely looking forward to seeing what they produce.

Online Behaviour

We have been reviewing how we conduct ourselves online. Children have been making all sorts of presentations, from movies, coding comics through to posters, to get their points across.
The 5 areas we have been looking at are:
Create a positive footprint
Represent yourself with respect and pride
Respect others online
Think before you act
and
Share your concerns

Here are a few of the creations.

THINK BEFORE ACTING

P.E. Lessons

As part of P.E. I have been giving the students more control of the learning and they experts in different sporting codes have been taking lessons.
The first lessons that we are looking at are Netball. Greta, Hollie, Alex, Emersyn, Isabella and Rebecca presented these. They did an amazing job teaching the class.
Here are some photos of the first sessions in action.

Sign Language

On Wednesday we had a visit from two people that use sign language. These people taught us many different things in the short time we were with them. We all learnt how to tell others our name, the alphabet and many other things.
We played a game that involved knowing colours and traffic light signals.
Here are some pictures.

Our Art Exhibition

We had a furious day setting the hall up for all our artworks, and a furious day finishing off unfinished art pieces. For those people that couldn't make it along on the day here are a few things that were shown. This is not only our class but other classes as well.

Turangawaewae Art Trip

We had an amazing day out and about Hawkes Bay. First we took a trip to the art exhibition be held at the Cheval Room at the race course. The children saw many inspiring and amazing paintings. Some of them absolutely blew their minds with the detail of them.

After this we had a quick stop at the Hastings Library to view the Pou outside as we will be creating our own in week 10 with Kotahitanga Week.

Our last stop was the museum in Napier. There was a huge variety of items on display and luckily for us, more artwork. This is going to be a great help for us for when we put on our art exhibition later on this term.

Measurement - Catapults

This term for maths we decided we would design catapults for our measurement unit.
Children had to find out all the dimensions of their catapults before they were given a hammer and nails to make them. Children encountered some challenges while doing this as sometimes the nails didn't stick or the spoon used to launch our beads would sometimes slip out. This made the class need to problem solve to find ways to counter the issues that arose. It was surprising to see such a wide variety of catapults. Although they all had the same materials to use, many of them used them in different ways to each other.

Once all the catapults were made it was time to test them out. The class wanted to use flaming ammunition on Hillary House, and while they thought that sounded fun I had to say "no" due to health and safety regulations (although I couldn't find any section specifically forbidding the use of catapults and flaming ammunition at school in a learning context).

We headed up to the netball courts with our devices of destruction and began to test them out. Children spent a long session measuring and firing and the amount of engaged children all focused on mathematics was amazing.

Expectations

We have been looking at classroom expectations this term.
We looked at how the students expect themselves to be treated by others in the class. Here is a quick padlet we threw together showing their thoughts.
